Maintaining a white smile is difficult for most people. I brush my teeth 2 – 3 times a day and floss when I remember, but my love for coffee and addiction to good ol’ Coke means I have an offensive diet to teeth everywhere. I’ve always been a little self-conscious of my smile. Even after years of braces and plates, my bottom row looks like a bucket of smashed crabs, and lately, I’d been noticing a faint yellow tinge as well.
Yikes! No one likes coming to that realisation. That’s why I was stoked to get my hands on Smile Brilliant’s at-home teeth whitening treatment. Let’s be real; I’ve tried a few different kits before that didn’t really work, so I was skeptical, but I was like ‘hey, what’s the worst that could happen?’.
In the teeth whitening kit, you’re hit with:
- 3 catalyst pastes
- 3 base pastes
- 2 impression trays
- 6 syringes of whitening gel
- 6 syringes of desensitizing gel
- instruction guides for tray creation and gel usage
- return card and postage-paid envelope (so you can send off your teeth moulds)
Well, I was pretty impressed with the custom-fitted trays. The problem I’d had with alternative brands was the trays never fit me properly. Too loose, too tight, or just digging into my gums which made an already uncomfortable situation worse. The custom trays meant I didn’t have to worry about the trays sticking into me or sliding off. Creating the moulds is easy. You mix a catalyst paste with a base paste, and BOOM, you’ve created a mixture fit to sink your teeth into — literally. Make your moulds and post them off, then, Smile Brilliant craft your custom-fitted trays and send them back to you. Voila! Within 1 – 2 weeks, you’re ready to start whitening.
Now for the fun part. Each gel syringe is good for 3 – 4 sessions. You’ve gotta do the whitening gel for 45 minutes – 3 hours every time, and the desensitising gel for a minimum of 15 minutes. I typically wore the trays for around 45 minutes – 1.5 hours each time and tried to do the desensitising gel for 20 minutes immediately after. I usually did it before bed as you can’t eat or drink for 30 minutes following the session, and did a treatment every 2 – 3 days.
I wasn’t too worried about any pain, as my teeth aren’t typically sensitive, so I was a little shocked when I first chucked my gel-lined trays in. I wouldn’t say it was ‘painful’, but it was unpleasant. My gums felt itchy and had a faint burning sensation for around the first 10 – 20 minutes of the treatment. It definitely faded after that and I could hardly even notice the trays — one time I even fell asleep in them. I thought over time I wouldn’t experience the burning sensation at all, but unfortunately it remained for the first part of the treatment each time. Beauty is pain, people! Even though I don’t have naturally sensitive teeth, sometimes my teeth would really hurt the next morning and it was quite uncomfortable to eat, but that didn’t happen very often.
I was stoked to notice the stains slowly disappearing with each session. My teeth always looked super-dooper white straight after the treatment, but it would always fade slightly the next day. It was kind of a two-steps-forward-one-step-back situation.
By the time I’d used up all the product, I’d done around 15 sessions. Are my teeth a blinding, Hollywood white? Nope! But I wouldn’t want them that white anyway. My teeth still aren’t as sparkly as I’d love them to be, but I have certainly noticed a difference. In particular, my stains have been significantly reduced, and I’m grateful I didn’t have to spend thousands of dollars at the dentist for it.
Let’s break this down a little more.
Pros:
- Super easy
- Custom trays
- Simple instructions
- Can do it at home in your jammies
- Cheaper alternative to clinical whitening treatments
- Much better than over-the-counter treatments I’ve tried (like whitening strips, etc)
Cons:
- A little uncomfortable — keep in mind that everyone’s experience is different, so you may not experience any nasty feelings.
- I wouldn’t recommend this product for people with extreme sensitivity
