Did you know your hair needs extra special care in the Summer months?
Sunshine, swimming and sweat are major players during Summer, and all three can wreak havoc on your tresses, leaving them a little less than gorgeous by the end of the season.
Thankfully, caring for your hair during the Summer doesn’t need to be difficult, time consuming or expensive. With a few simple tricks, you’ll keep rocking that sexy mane all the way through.

My Essential Summer Hair Care Tips
1. Treat with coconut oil
How frickin’ awesome is coconut oil? It’s like the be-all-and-end-all of DIY everything – especially in the beauty department. And nobody loves coconut oil more than your hair! It adds moisture and replenishes the natural oils that get stripped away during our day-to-day Summer fun.
Rub coconut oil into your hair as a mask half an hour before washing – preferably every time you wash your hair in the Summer, but at least once a week. (Hot tip: the easiest way to wash coconut oil out of your hair is to rub shampoo into your oiled-up hair BEFORE dunking your head under the shower. Water splashed directly onto the oil will seize it up and make it waxy, but if you break it down with shampoo first, then add water gradually, you’ll have no problems.)
Grab coconut oil next time you’re at the grocery store (unrefined is best) or snap it up off Amazon right now. For something a little more special, you could also try out this raw, beauty-grade version by COCO&CO.
2. Wash less often
Washing with shampoo strips your hair of natural oils, and your hair desperately needs all the natural oils it can keep. It might be tempting to follow your daily swim with a full hair wash, but your hair will be a lot happier if you simply rinse it with water after trips to the pool, saving the full wash for once or twice a week at the most. Apply a small amount of witch hazel over your scalp between washes to help deal with any excess oil.
3. Try essential oils
There are many essential oils that are deserving of a place in your Summer hair care routine. Chamomile is a tried and true scalp-soother, and sage aides shine and helps to prevent dandruff. Lavender and rosemary promote growth and thickness (making them awesome additions to your year-round hair care routine!). Plus they’ll all leave your hair smelling divine!

4. Use a Leave-In Conditioner
You should be using a leave-in conditioner year-round, but Summer hair is especially hungry for it. I always recommend Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure Repair Rescue Sealed Ends when it comes to leave-in conditioner. Apply leave-in conditioner to your ends after every wash while your hair is still wet. Hello moisture!
5. Make a DIY hair mist
Grab a cheap spray bottle from the grocery store and chuck in a few basic ingredients for an instant DIY mist to treat your hair any time it needs a little bump of moisture. This after-sun spray or this moisturizing aloe vera mist are both great options made with easy-to-find ingredients.
6. Avoid heat styling
In Summer, messy beach hair always rates higher than meticulously styled curls or blow-outs. Pop the straightener, the blow drier and the curling wand in the bathroom cupboard for a few months and embrace that sexy Summer mane. Pull it back with chunky braids, messy buns and wild ponytails, or let it hang loose.
7. Cover it up
If you’re facing an extended amount of time out in the sun, the best thing you can do for your Summer hair is to cover it up with a hat. Big floppy straw hats are totally boho, and totally cute. I am obsessed with the embroidered slogan straw hats at the moment, like the one pictured above, or this one which has a ton of slogan options.
If you’re not going to be out all day and would rather avoid a hat, at the very least rub a little sunscreen through your hair when applying it to your face.
Your healthy Summer hair routine is essential, but it’s not hard to implement!
Some small changes will make a difference, and leave you with the best Summer hair ever!
