Today I’m going to introduce you to someone who REALLY REALLY INSPIRES ME. I’m excited!
Chris and I have been fans of Mike and Lauren for a long time now. Their videos on personal finance, DIY, business ventures and travel (plus way more) have always gotten us crazy motivated and inspired. They were a big motivating factor behind us gaining control of our finances, and we love to keep up with everything they do – it seems like there’s always something exciting on the horizon! They’re just not content to settle into an easy, predictable life; they’re adventurous, they take risks, and they live well. We admire the heck out of them – as do their other 78,000+ subscribers on YouTube!
These days they’re living on the road for 1-2 months at a time on a project they’ve dubbed Makers on the Move, visiting folks all over America to complete DIY projects with them, and living out of a trailer. On top of that, they have a (ridiculously adorable!) little boy, Hudson, who I have just realized is about to turn ONE YEAR OLD and HOW DID THAT TIME GO SO QUICKLY!?! Wow. (Side note: Chris is seriously trying to convince me to name our next child Hudson if it’s a boy.) (Future child. Not pregnant. Glad we cleared that up.) You guys, I can’t even image how crazy it must be having a toddler on the road for a month or two at a time, let alone filming the whole experience and then spending your free time editing footage – but they seem to genuinely love it!
As a pair, they’re awesome – but I was really curious to get to know Lauren outside of their videos. Lucky for me, Lauren was more than happy to share a bit of her heart. So today I am thrilled to introduce you to her! Lauren is as lovely, down-to-earth and genuine as she appears in their videos (we’ve exchanged a few emails, we’re basically friends now) – but there’s a lot more to her than what we see on camera.
On your channel, we see a lot about Mike’s interests in DIY and business start-ups, but your interests and endeavours have been a bit more off-camera. What are you passionate about?
“This might sound a little cliche, but I love jewellery and gemstones! Soon after Mike and I got married we actually moved to New York City so that I could go to school at the Gemological Institute of America to study to become a gemologist. I had always wanted to work at Tiffany & Co in the city, and ended up getting a job there after I graduated so we stayed up north for three years… I am really hoping we can visit some gem mines while traveling so I can try my luck at finding something cool!
I also used to teach the 4th and 5th graders on the weekends at our church. I loved teaching, but never really pursued it as a profession. Mike and I have been working on a “5 year plan” recently and it’s become kind of obvious that we’re probably going to end up home-schooling Hudson. I’ve got a few years to figure things out, but I’m hoping my enjoyment of teaching will still be there by then!”
Mike is pretty skilled in the workshop! Have you picked up any handy-woman skills over the years?
“Mike is very skilled! I’m always so impressed with the ideas he comes up with, and how he executes them. I like to think that I’ve picked up some skills from Mike. He’s taught me how to use some of the different saws which has been pretty fun. I definitely appreciate the time and work that goes into making things more than I did when he would just show me the finished product. I’ve helped make a cabinet to hold my necklaces, but I think my favorite project to help with was the set of wooden tools we made when we found out that we were having a boy!”
Speaking of Hudson, you’ve been a mother now for almost a year! What has surprised you most about motherhood?
“The attachment to your child has surprised me a lot. Since I’m home with Hudson, I’m with him from the moment he wakes up in the morning to the moment he goes to sleep at night, with a couple naps as the only break in between on most days. It’s always funny to me that when I get a break away from him I just want to be back home with him again!”
Did you picture your life looking anything like this when you married Mike?
“Mike and I have known each other since I was just 12 years old, and started dating when I was 15, so it’s safe to say I know him very well. I always knew we wouldn’t be the typical couple, living in a house in the suburbs with a white picket fence, but I didn’t know exactly how things would pan out. We get a lot of comments that say things about me not seeming happy, or that everything seems to be Mike’s idea, but I can say with confidence that I’m exactly where I want to be, and if I were not 100% on board with something, Mike wouldn’t push it.”
What does the future look like for Mike and Lauren (the couple, not the YouTube channel!)?
“We’ve discussed where we see ourselves in 5 years and have come up with some pretty crazy plans that I hope will come to fruition! For now we will be outfitting our trailer so that Makers on the Move will work better than it did on our test run. Then after doing that for a year or so we hope to purchase property in Costa Rica and build our own house that we can use for part of the year, as well as share it with friends and family. And then eventually we would love to buy a Dutch barge to convert into a house boat to sail the French canals!
But as all things go with us, these plans could change drastically by the time we get there. We do know for sure that we love making videos, traveling and DIY so we will find things that combine those things.”
Now… let’s talk about Makers on the Move. Who came up with the idea?
“Mike first mentioned the idea, and I’m pretty sure it was only because he’s always wanted to live in an RV! He also likes making things that are unique but serve a purpose, and we were running out of room in our house for all of his projects! He figured that we could drive around and help people make cool projects that they get to keep, and we just hit the road again.”
(Lauren also noted that although the idea was Mike’s, she was on board pretty much immediately!)
You guys are pretty seasoned when it comes to travelling abroad, but what locations are you really looking forward to seeing as you travel across your own country?
“I can’t wait to visit the western part of the US! We live in Florida, so I’ve spent a lot of time on the east coast, but haven’t really been able to explore other areas. I’m looking forward to visiting all the national parks out west! We would also love to eventually head up into Canada, and then down the road we plan on driving the trailer through Central America, into Costa Rica once we have residency there.”
What’s awesome about this endeavour? What’s been tough?
“It’s been so nice spending time together as a family! We’ve been so lucky that Mike and I both have been able to be home with Hudson and that was a big plus when working out our plans. (But) on our last trip it didn’t feel like we had any down time. We scheduled projects a little too close together so we pretty much finished one and the next day had to start driving to the next one. Our next trip will be planned a bit better, and we’ll go at a much slower pace so that should help Mike and I both to have time off in between projects.”
How’s Hudson on the road? He always seems to be smiling in your Vlogs!
“Hudson is always smiling, he is seriously the happiest baby ever! So far he’s been very relaxed and easy going while traveling. Mike and I worked really hard to get Hudson on a schedule (or at least as much of a schedule as a baby allows haha) so that no matter where we are he can know what to expect. It worked really well on this trip, he would take naps in his pack n play at our hosts’ house while we were working, and he loved the crib Mike made for him on the RV.”
Thank you so much to Lauren for letting us feature her today! I thoroughly thoroughly THOROUGHLY recommend you check out Mike and Lauren’s YouTube channel and various other links:
